As a student on a World School program, you want to know what the food and accommodations will be like.
Food
World School meals typically reflect the cuisine of the location. Three meals a day are provided to all students. If you have a food allergy, please note it on your health form and likewise, if you are a vegetarian, please note that as well.
Since most of our programs involve camping, come prepared to pitch in for kitchen duty. Kitchen duty means that students are split into teams and everyone gets a chance to help cook and clean.
While staying with the host families, meals are provided. Students are usually most concerned with what they will eat with their host families, but almost always they are pleasantly surprised.
Accommodations
Accommodations during World School programs include camping in tents, staying with host families, and in hostels.
Camping
If you have never camped before, you will learn the basics of low-impact camping. We will teach you how to camp with minimal impact on the environment - this includes learning to 'use the facilities' in nature. Camping is an amazing experience and guaranteed you will learn that camping can be a fun opportunity to see unique places and environments that you might not otherwise access if you weren't camping.
Host Families / Homestays
Staying with host families is a valuable experience. World School places at least 2 students per family and girls stay with girls while boys stay with boys.
Students are often nervous about the host family experience. What kind of house do they live in? Do they have electricity? Is there a bathroom? What will we eat?
These are all typical questions of students entering into a host family experience. All of these questions are addressed in detail during the program and we encourage students to tell the program leaders of any concerns they may have. All of our leaders have stayed with host families as students and can identify with the fears that students have about the experience. The more open you are with the leaders, the better we can prepare you.
Rest assured that we do not place students with families that we have not previously worked with. All families are use to hosting students and are good people that are excited to share their culture and lives with American students.
Hostels / Guesthouses
Hostels and guesthouses are like small hotels. Some are family run and they usually cater to travelers. When we stay in hostels, we assign students to same-sex rooms; again, boys with boys and girls with girls.
In all of our accommodation situations, it is imperative that everyone respects each other, their privacy and personal space. Rules we have about accommodations and respect for every person on the trip are not negotiable.
